We follow the true story of the surviving family members and see how they are now facing major change and have to re-build their lives. But that comes with time. Losing someone is very painful. The people on the show experience all kinds of difficult emotions and we get the feeling that the pain and sadness they experiencing will never let up.
The viewers realize that these are normal reactions to a significant loss. But while there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there are healthy ways to cope with the pain that, in time, can renew and permit live to move on. We experience their journey and discover what’s at stake.
An Amagugu episode consists of a mixture of interviews with the real person and actors reconstruct the events. The stories all revolve around the contributors experience with a death and funeral of a person close to them. We hear about the grieving and the events around the death. SABC 1 Weekly 2016
DOCUMENTARY
No Borders – From Township to Favela
Documentary series - 2014 (8x 24:00)
Two communities, two continents and two journeys. No Borders is a journey of discovery and exploration, an 8-part television series creating a dialogue between the realities of a favela in Brazil and a township in South Africa, through the eyes of two of its charismatic community leaders.
In Brazil, and especially in Rio, the history of favelas traces back to former illegal settlements occupied initially by freed slaves and later by poor migrants and immigrants in search of a better life in Brazilian big cities. Favelas were slowly urbanised and are today home to a significant part of Rio’s working class, living alongside contrasting upmarket neighbourhoods.
In South Africa, the word township usually refers to urban living areas that were reserved for non-whites. Today, these areas are buzzing with growth, but are still fighting for better social standards while steeped in a vibrant cultural past.
It is tempting, in the realities shared by these two developing nations, to judge both townships and favelas for their hard past and tales of poverty and crime. However, there is much more to townships and favelas than meets the eye. They are a vibrant part of the cities in which they exist, each leaving an indelible mark in the cultural landscape of their regions.
Phillip Malepa and Sidney Tartaruga leave behind the comfort and familiarity of their respective homes to discover how others in similar spaces live across the seas. Phillip makes his journey to Sidney’s Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, and later Sydney travels to meet Phillip in Soweto, in South Africa.

Recently I completed a series - IT Takes A Village, featuring DJ Zinhle.
DJ Zinhle is committed to making a difference in the lives of young women in South Africa starting in her hometown Dannhauser, KZN. It’s a small town in crisis. It’s challenges reflects the social issues faced by small towns across South Africa - unemployment, alcohol and drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, crime, just to name some.
